Celebrating International Wheelchair Day: Empowering Mobility and Independence

On International Wheelchair Day, India witnessed a range of initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. Wheelchair distribution, training sessions, and awareness events highlighted the importance of mobility, independence, and inclusivity.

In recognition of International Wheelchair Day, numerous initiatives were organized under the auspices of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, national institutes, composite regional centers, and public sector undertakings (PSUs), as announced in an official statement.

Distribution of Wheelchairs and Training Sessions

The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) distributed wheelchairs to beneficiaries of the ADIP schemes across its various centers. In addition to wheelchair distribution, ALIMCO conducted training sessions to educate wheelchair users and their attendants on proper wheelchair usage, ensuring optimal mobility and safety.

Educating Individuals about Wheelchair Options

The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities in Secunderabad organized training programs and practical demonstrations showcasing different types of wheelchairs. This initiative aimed to educate individuals about the diverse range of wheelchair options available to meet specific mobility needs, empowering them to make informed choices.

Promoting Inclusivity and Accessibility

The Composite Regional Centre in Davanagere conducted a specialized training program designed for wheelchair users and the general public, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and accessibility. The program aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by wheelchair users and foster a more inclusive society.

100-Meter Wheelchair Race

Marking the occasion, the Composite Regional Centre in Tripura organized a 100-meter wheelchair race for individuals with locomotor disabilities at the Narsinghgarh Higher Secondary School. This event promoted physical activity and sportsmanship among the differently-abled community, encouraging their participation in sports and recreational activities.

Awareness Rally and Sports Activities

The Composite Regional Centre in Nellore organized an awareness rally and various sports activities to celebrate International Wheelchair Day. These events fostered a spirit of unity and solidarity among the beneficiaries, promoting social inclusion and recognizing the contributions of individuals with disabilities.

Through these initiatives, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and its associated organizations demonstrated their commitment to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
