International Day For The Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2025, Promoting Equality and Global Unity
Observed annually on March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination serves as a global reminder of our commitment to equality and the ongoing fight against racism. Despite progress, racial discrimination continues to poison societies, creating barriers, limiting opportunities, and denying people their fundamental rights to dignity, justice, and fairness. This day calls for collective efforts to challenge and dismantle racist ideologies and practices while fostering unity beyond ethnic divisions.
2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, a landmark global commitment to eradicating racism in all its forms. The occasion reinforces the need to continue addressing racial injustice and ensuring that every individual, regardless of race, lives in a world of fairness and equal opportunity.

Throughout history, leaders have championed the fight against racism. Among them, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, powerfully stated:
"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word."
This quote highlights his unwavering belief in a future free from racial injustice, where love and truth ultimately triumph.
Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation in South Africa, where the white minority controlled and oppressed the non-white majority. The struggle to dismantle apartheid was one of the key reasons the United Nations proclaimed March 21 as a day to honor those who fought against racial discrimination and to push for its eradication worldwide.
Despite global commitments, racial discrimination persists across the world.
In the Netherlands, one in ten people reported experiencing discrimination in 2023, affecting 1.6 million individuals. The childcare benefit scandal wrongly accused families of fraud based on ethnicity, leading to over 2,000 children being forcibly removed from their homes between 2015 and 2022.
In the United Kingdom, between March 2023 and March 2024, 70 percent of all hate crimes were racially motivated, with 98,799 out of 140,561 reports classified as racist attacks.
In France, 16,000 cases of racist, xenophobic, and anti-religious crimes were reported in 2024, an 11 percent increase from the previous year. Most victims were men aged 25 to 54, often of African descent.
Notorious racially charged incidents worldwide include the killing of George Floyd in 2020, which sparked global protests against racial injustice, the assault on Nigerian student Endurance Amalawa in India in 2017, and the racially motivated shooting of Indian immigrant Srinivas Kuchibhotla in the United States the same year. Other incidents include the tragic deaths of Shaolin Chandam in Virginia, Gurnoor Singh Nahal in California, and multiple cases of violence against people of color in recent years.
Combatting racism isn't just about policies-it starts with individual actions. Here are ten essential ways to practice anti-racism daily. Educate yourself, be intentional, show courage, recognize individuality, uphold humanity, engage in anti-racist work, advocate for equality, practice empathy, be an ally, and lead with love.
To take action, listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized communities, say no to hate speech and intolerance, teach children about equality and human rights, speak up when witnessing racism or discrimination, and support human rights organizations working to combat racial injustice.
As Roxane Gay wrote in her essay on racial justice, "Black people do not need allies. We need people to stand up and take on the problems borne of oppression as their own, without removal or distance."
On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, let's reflect, educate, and take action. A world free of racism is not just an ideal-it's a necessity.
