Instagram Livestream Rules 2025: Check Meta's Latest Update

Instagram has recently updated its live streaming feature, now requiring users to have at least 1,000 followers to access it. This change follows the introduction of new direct messaging and blocking features in India. Users with fewer than 1,000 followers can still use video calling to engage with their audience.

There is speculation that Instagram's decision might be aimed at conserving resources. Live streaming demands significant resources, and the company may not find it cost-effective to support broadcasts for small audiences. Additionally, limiting this feature could enhance the quality of live streams by ensuring a minimum audience size.

Preventing Inappropriate Content

Another reason for this restriction could be to curb inappropriate or explicit content from being streamed live. If accounts are banned for such content, they would need to regain 1,000 followers before they can stream again. This measure could help maintain a safer environment on the platform.

This move aligns Instagram with other platforms like YouTube and TikTok. On YouTube, creators need at least 50 followers for live streaming, while TikTok requires a minimum of 1,000 followers for the same feature.

Enhancing Teen Safety

Instagram has also introduced new features aimed at protecting teenage users in direct messaging. When teens initiate a chat, even if both parties follow each other, Instagram will display safety tips. These reminders encourage teens to scrutinise profiles and exercise caution when sharing information if something seems suspicious.

Furthermore, Instagram now displays the month and year when an account was created at the top of chats. This addition helps teenagers identify potentially fake or scam accounts more easily by providing context about how long an account has existed.
