INS Mormugao Model Unveiled in Goa, Showcasing Indias Maritime Might
The Indian Navy gifted a model of the advanced INS Mormugao, a testament to Indias indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, to the Goa government on the eve of Goa Liberation Day, symbolizing the states growing maritime significance.
On the eve of Goa Liberation Day, the Indian Navy presented a model of the country's newest indigenous stealth-guided missile destroyer, INS Mormugao, to the state government. The ceremony took place at Mormugao harbor in Vasco, with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of the Western Naval Command, in attendance.
Display of Indigenous Prowess
The 30-foot-long model of INS Mormugao will be showcased in Vasco city. Chief Minister Sawant highlighted the significant indigenous content of the warship, which stands at 75%, marking a substantial increase from previous destroyer classes. He emphasized that INS Mormugao embodies the spirit of "Make in India" and India's pursuit of self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat). Sawant expressed confidence that the ship will proudly represent Goa as it sails across the globe.
Commemorating Goa Liberation Day
December 18 holds dual significance as it marks both the 61st anniversary of Operation Vijay and the eve of Goa Liberation Day. Goa Liberation Day is celebrated on December 19 to commemorate the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule through military action codenamed Operation Vijay. Chief Minister Sawant acknowledged the crucial role played by the Indian Navy in Goa's liberation, noting that the Goa operation marked the first time the navy participated in tri-service operations.
INS Mormugao: A Symbol of Technological Advancement
INS Mormugao, the second warship of the P15B class of stealth, guided missile destroyers of the Indian Navy, was commissioned on December 18, 2022, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The ship was launched on September 17, 2016, and underwent sea trials on December 19, 2021, coinciding with Goa Liberation Day.
The gifting of the INS Mormugao model to the Goa government serves as a testament to the Indian Navy's contributions to Goa's liberation and India's growing technological prowess in shipbuilding. INS Mormugao stands as a symbol of the country's commitment to self-reliance and its pursuit of a strong maritime presence.
