Infosys Founder's Wife Sudha Murthy Defends Husband's 70-Hour Work Per Week Remark

Sudha Murthy has come to the defense of her husband and Infosys founder, Narayana Murthy, who stirred up a debate by advocating a "70 hours-a-week" work regimen for young individuals to enhance India's overall productivity.

Speaking to News18, the renowned author and head of Infosys Foundation expressed that Narayana Murthy's perspective is rooted in his personal experience, having himself committed to working 80 to 90 hours a week.

"He has dedicated 80 to 90 hours a week to work, and thus, he might not comprehend anything less than that. He values unwavering commitment and has lived his life accordingly. Hence, he has shared what he believes," Sudha Murthy said, underscoring her husband's unwavering commitment to passion and "true hard work."

When questioned if she had attempted to explain the contemporary corporate dynamics to him, she replied, "People express themselves differently. However, he has embodied the ethos he champions, having practiced what he preaches. Hence, he is recounting his own journey."

Narayana Murthy ignited a storm on social media following his appearance on a podcast, where he suggested the concept of a 70-hour work week for young individuals. During a discussion with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, Murthy contended that India's work productivity ranks amongst the world's lowest and posited that, in order to compete with nations like China, India's youth must invest additional work hours, akin to the post-World War 2 efforts of Japan and Germany.

"Hence, I urge our young citizens to say, 'This is my nation. I'm willing to dedicate 70 hours a week,'" the 77-year-old entrepreneur said.

Notwithstanding, social media experts, healthcare professionals, and fellow business leaders swiftly highlighted the potential health hazards and stress-related issues associated with such an arduous routine. Furthermore, they pointed out that extended work hours could potentially result in a decline in work quality and a diminished personal life quality.
