Teen Daughter Offers Liver to Save Father; Court Awaits Medical Report
In a recent development that highlights the critical state of healthcare access in rural India, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has taken a significant step by seeking a detailed report from a private hospital regarding a unique petition. This petition was filed by Shivnarayan Batham, a 42-year-old farmer grappling with a severe liver condition, who has sought the court's permission to allow his 17-year-old daughter, Preeti, to donate part of her liver to save his life.

Advocate Nilesh Manore, representing Batham, informed that Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi has mandated the hospital to furnish a comprehensive report within two days concerning Batham's medical status. The farmer, who has been battling this liver disease for over six years, finds a glimmer of hope as the court schedules the next hearing for June 20.
Batham's plight is not just a medical crisis but also a reflection of the socio-economic challenges faced by individuals residing in the rural outskirts of Indore district. With five daughters to support and an elderly father aged 80, along with his wife suffering from diabetes, the family's decision underscores their desperate circumstances. Preeti, the eldest daughter, stepping forward to donate part of her liver, exemplifies profound familial bonds and the dire need for accessible healthcare solutions.
The urgency of Batham's condition was further emphasized by Manore, who pointed out that doctors have warned of the critical risk to Batham's life if the liver transplant does not occur promptly. This case not only sheds light on the complexities surrounding organ donation laws and regulations in India but also on the pressing need for medical interventions in rural areas where healthcare facilities are often limited or out of reach.
As this case progresses, it serves as a crucial reminder of the healthcare disparities that persist across urban and rural divides. The outcome could potentially influence future legal and medical protocols regarding organ donations in India, especially concerning minors donating organs to their parents. With the high court's intervention, there is hope for not just Batham but many others in similar situations across the country, awaiting timely and effective medical care.
