Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, are also going to host the 2036 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will host next year its elections. "It is India's dream to host the 2036 Olympics, and we are making preparations for that," Modi stated during his speech on the 78th Independence Day.

The Prime Minister pointed out that India's successful hosting of the G20 Summit last September demonstrated its capability to manage significant international events. "India organising the G20 Summit on a large scale has proven that India has the capability to organise large-scale events," he said.

Support from IOC and Potential Host City

Thomas Bach, the current head of the IOC, has expressed support for India's ambitious plan. Ahmedabad is being considered as a leading candidate to be the host city for the 2036 Olympics. The last major international multi-sport event hosted by India was the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Modi also took time to congratulate Indian athletes for their performance at the recently concluded Paris Olympics. India secured six medals: one silver and five bronze in athletics, shooting, hockey, and wrestling.

"Today, we also have with us the youth who made the Indian flag fly high in the Olympics. On behalf of 140 crore countrymen, I congratulate all our athletes and players," Modi said. Among those present were pistol shooter Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals in Paris, and members of the Indian hockey team, including star goalkeeper P R Sreejesh.

The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent set to participate in the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8 in Paris. "In the next few days, a huge Indian contingent will leave for Paris to participate in the Paralympics. I extend best wishes to all our Paralympians," he added.

In the Tokyo Paralympics, India had an impressive haul of 19 medals – five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes. This year, India will be represented by 84 para-athletes at the Games.

The Prime Minister's address underscored India's determination and preparedness to host global sporting events while celebrating recent athletic achievements on an international stage.
