Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra Secure Top Spots in Modi's Cabinet

In a significant reshuffle and expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra have emerged with substantial representation, reflecting the political landscape and upcoming electoral battles. Uttar Pradesh, with the highest number of Lok Sabha seats at 80, secured nine ministerial berths, including one Cabinet position. Bihar followed closely, obtaining four Cabinet positions out of eight ministerial slots. Maharashtra, gearing up for assembly polls, has been allocated six berths, featuring two Cabinet ministers.

The distribution of ministerial positions underscores the strategic importance of these states in the national political arena. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan each have welcomed five members into the council. States such as Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have been allotted three ministerial berths each. Meanwhile, Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand, Telangana, Punjab, West Bengal, and Kerala have two each.

Rajnath Singh stands out as the sole Cabinet minister from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat's representation in the Cabinet includes Prime Minister Modi himself, along with Amit Shah, Mansukh Mandaviya, and C R Paatil. Bihar's Cabinet presence is marked by notable figures such as former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi from HAMS, Rajiv Ranjan Singh Lalan from JDU, Giriraj Singh from BJP, and Chirag Paswan from LJP RV.

Madhya Pradesh's Cabinet roles are filled by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Virendra Kumar, and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Maharashtra's Cabinet representation is bolstered by Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal. Tamil Nadu's Cabinet influence is carried by Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, with L Murugan serving as Minister of State. Notably, Murugan is a Rajya Sabha member from Madhya Pradesh while Sitharaman and Jaishankar represent Karnataka and Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha respectively.

Rajasthan has secured three Cabinet berths with Ashwini Vaishnaw, Bhupender Yadav, and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat taking up roles alongside Arjun Ram Meghwal who has been appointed as Minister of State Independent Charge. Vaishnaw hails from Rajasthan but represents Odisha in the Rajya Sabha.

Other states like Odisha and Karnataka have also marked their presence in the Cabinet with Dharmendra Pradhan and Jual Oram for Odisha; H D Kumaraswamy and Pralhad Joshi for Karnataka. The BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda along with former chief ministers Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam), Annpurna Devi (Jharkhand), Kiren Rijiju (Arunachal Pradesh), and others have also been included in the Cabinet.

Ministers of State Independent Charge include notable names such as RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary from Uttar Pradesh and Shiv Sena leader Prataprao Jadhav from Maharashtra. Rao Inderjit Singh represents Haryana while Arjun Ram Meghwal hails from Rajasthan. Jitendra Singh has been appointed from Jammu and Kashmir.

Interestingly, some members of the council are MPs representing states different from their domicile. This includes actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi from Kerala's Thrissur Lok Sabha seat and senior BJP leader George Kurian also from Kerala appointed as Ministers of State.

The reshuffle not only reflects a strategic political move ahead of upcoming elections but also showcases a diverse representation across various states. This reconfiguration aims at strengthening the governance framework while ensuring a balanced regional representation in the central government.
