Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Mauni Amavasya: How Indian Railways Is Preparing For The Rush?

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Mauni Amavasya: As the Maha Kumbh Mela continues to attract millions of devotees to Prayagraj, Indian Railways is preparing for the anticipated surge of pilgrims during Mauni Amavasya on January 29, 2025. With an eye on safety and efficient transit, Railways is implementing a series of strategic measures to accommodate the massive crowd, improve infrastructure, and ensure a seamless pilgrimage experience, as reported by News9live.

The upcoming Mauni Amavasya is expected to witness an overwhelming number of pilgrims arriving in Prayagraj for the sacred Amrit Snan (holy dip). To manage this massive influx, Indian Railways has announced the deployment of more than 400 special trains. These trains will provide dedicated transportation to and from key locations during this peak period of the Maha Kumbh Mela.

A collaborative effort from three major railway zones-Northern Railway (NR), North Eastern Railway (NER), and North Central Railway (NCR)-will oversee the operation of these special trains. While ensuring ample trains are available, about 86 regular trains will be either cancelled, diverted, or stopped early to prioritize the Mela specials, with North Central Railway contributing more than 200 additional trains to the cause.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Improved Amenities

In preparation for the record-breaking number of pilgrims, Indian Railways has made significant upgrades to the infrastructure in Prayagraj. The number of platforms at key stations has increased from 40 to 48, with enhanced waiting areas capable of accommodating up to 130,000 passengers at a time. Stations such as Prayag Junction, Phaphamau, and Prayagraj Sangam are now equipped with better amenities, including air-conditioned waiting rooms, mobile charging stations, medical facilities, and multi-lingual help desks to ensure a smooth experience for passengers, as reported by TimesOf India.

In addition, dedicated zones for lost items, coach guidance, and ticketing have been set up to assist pilgrims in navigating the stations more efficiently.

A Commitment to Safety

With the huge number of devotees expected at the Maha Kumbh Mela, safety remains a top priority for Indian Railways. To prevent potential emergencies such as stampedes, mock drills have been conducted in collaboration with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and local authorities. These drills focus on preparedness for scenarios such as medical emergencies, fires, and crowd management challenges, as reported by Hindustan Tinmes.

Seamless Travel Options for Pilgrims

Railways is also introducing ring rail services on routes like Rambagh-Jhusi-Banaras-Bhadohi and Sultanpur-Maa Belha Devi Dham-Pratapgarh to offer smoother access to and from the Mela grounds. This service aims to ease travel for pilgrims and provide better connectivity across the region during the event, as per media reports.

With these extensive measures, Indian Railways is committed to offering a safe, efficient, and comfortable journey for pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh Mela. As the date of Mauni Amavasya approaches, the railways are fully prepared to handle the overwhelming footfall, ensuring that the sacred journey remains as seamless and fulfilling as possible.
