Indian Railways Allows Boarding Point Change Up To 30 Minutes Before Train Departure From April 1

Passengers travelling on Indian Railways will now get more flexibility if their travel plans change at the last minute. Southern Railway has announced that from April 1, 2026, passengers can change their boarding point up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of their train, a major relaxation from the earlier rule that required such changes at least 24 hours in advance.

The revised rule is expected to make train travel more convenient for passengers who need to adjust their boarding station due to sudden schedule changes. The facility will be available only for confirmed and RAC ticket holders, while waitlisted passengers will not be eligible to use it.

Southern Railway Revises Boarding Point Change Deadline

Under the new rule, passengers can now request a change in boarding station much closer to departure time. Instead of applying at least 24 hours before the train leaves, travellers can now make the change up to 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure.

This update marks a significant shift in the boarding point change policy and is aimed at helping passengers manage last-minute changes more smoothly.

Who Can Use The Facility And What Conditions Apply

The boarding point change facility will be available only to passengers holding confirmed or RAC tickets. Those with waitlisted tickets will continue to remain outside the scope of this service.

There are also some restrictions attached to the revised facility. The boarding station can be changed only once for each ticket. In addition, the request must be submitted before railway staff prepare the second reservation chart, which is issued shortly before the train departs.

How Passengers Can Change Their Boarding Station

Passengers can make use of this facility either online through IRCTC or offline at PRS counters. To submit the request, travellers will need a valid ticket along with matching ID proof.

Once the change is approved, the revised boarding station details will be reflected in the second reservation chart. This ensures that ticket examiners are aware of the updated station from where the passenger is expected to board the train.

Earlier Rule Vs New Rule

Before this revision, passengers had to request a boarding point change at least 24 hours before the train's departure. The updated boarding station would then be reflected only in the first reservation chart, which is typically prepared four hours before departure.

Under the new system, the request window remains open until 30 minutes before departure, and the updated boarding point will now be captured in the second reservation chart.
