Indian Navy Leads Campaign to Expand Mangrove Plantations Along Coastal Belts
The Indian Navy is leading a strategic campaign to enhance mangrove plantations along coastal regions. This initiative involves collaboration with environmental specialists to evaluate current plantations and start new projects, according to officials. On World Environment Day, June 5, the Navy reiterated its dedication to fostering a cleaner and greener future.

With a focus on sustainability, the Navy is committed to protecting India's maritime ecosystem. The defence ministry highlighted the Navy's ongoing efforts in environmental stewardship. This year's World Environment Day theme is "Ending Plastic Pollution Globally," which aligns with the Navy's green initiatives.
Environmental Initiatives and Renewable Energy
Naval units across the country have launched various initiatives aimed at creating a cleaner environment. The ministry stated that these efforts are part of a broader transformation towards sustainability. The Indian Navy is actively reducing its ecological footprint by embracing renewable energy and sustainable practices.
The Green Initiative Programme is gaining traction, with World Environment Day serving as an important milestone. These occasions help reinforce the Navy's commitment to global environmental efforts, according to the ministry's statement.
Coastal Preservation Efforts
The Navy's dedication to coastal preservation is further demonstrated through feasibility studies for floating trash barriers and biodiversity surveys. These efforts are part of a memorandum of understanding with The Habitats Trust and HCL Foundation, aimed at rejuvenating coastal ecosystems.
Tree re-plantation drives have also been initiated to support local ecosystems and aid carbon sequestration. Advanced techniques are being used to relocate trees aged two to seven years, ensuring maximum environmental impact.
Mangroves: Natural Coastal Protectors
Mangroves serve as natural barriers against storms, floods, and erosion, playing a vital role in coastal protection. The Indian Navy's campaign to expand mangrove plantations involves engaging experts to assess existing plantations and initiate new drives.
The defence ministry emphasized that these efforts are crucial for safeguarding India's rich maritime ecosystem while promoting sustainability. By focusing on renewable energy and sustainable practices, the Navy aims to minimize its ecological footprint.
The phased expansion of mangrove plantations reflects the Navy's proactive approach towards environmental responsibility. Through collaboration with leading experts, the initiative seeks to enhance coastal resilience and biodiversity.
