Indian Markets Surge As Donald Trump Becomes New US President; Nifty and Sensex Open Higher
Indian stock markets gained momentum on Tuesday as Donald Trump began his second term as President of the United States. Both the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex opened in the green.
The Nifty 50 index started at 23,421.65, rising by 76.90 points (0.33%), while the BSE Sensex climbed by 188.28 points (0.24%) to open at 77,261.72. Sectoral indices on the NSE also posted gains, with Nifty Metal and Nifty PSU Bank leading the charge with a 0.5% increase, while Nifty IT rose by 0.23%.

Among individual stocks in the Nifty 50, 37 opened higher, with Ultratech Cement, Apollo Hospital, BPCL, and Wipro among the top gainers. On the downside, Trent, Adani Enterprises, Kotak Bank, and NTPC were among the notable laggards.
Global and Domestic Context
Asian markets reflected mixed trends, with Japan's Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng showing significant gains of 1.16% and 1.72%, respectively. However, Singapore's Straits Times and South Korea's KOSPI saw slight declines.
Domestically, the day is significant for quarterly earnings reports from major companies such as UCO Bank, Tata Technologies, Dalmia Bharat, and PNB Housing Finance, among others, which are expected to influence investor sentiment further.
Speaking to ANI, Ajay Bagga, a banking and market expert, highlighted the potential impact of Trump's policies, stating, "Trump 2.0 is here. More experienced, more determined and with loads of Day 1 Executive Orders issued. As the Trump Cabinet gets approved, a lot of these will start getting translated into legislation and action on the ground will start." He also noted that immediate focus areas would include tariffs, immigration, tax reforms, deregulation, and energy security, which are expected to influence global markets and commodities.
Bagga added that Indian markets are particularly relieved that no blanket tariffs have been imposed so far, a concern that could have disrupted trade dynamics.
Trump's Second Term Commences
Donald Trump officially resumed office as President during the 2025 inauguration, a landmark moment in U.S. politics. Former President Barack Obama attended the ceremony, though the absence of Michelle Obama sparked conversations online. As Trump begins his second term, his policies are expected to shape global economic and political landscapes in the coming years.
