Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh hailed the genome sequencing project as a watershed moment for science in India. Addressing a function in New Delhi, Singh emphasized the importance of genome studies in shaping future healthcare strategies, both therapeutically and prophylactically. He stressed the need for finding indigenous solutions to Indian problems, positioning the country as a frontline nation in the realm of scientific advancement.

Understanding India's Genetic Diversity

India's vast population of 1.3 billion comprises over 4,600 population groups, many of which are endogamous. These factors have contributed to the country's remarkable genetic diversity. As a result, the Indian population harbors distinct variations, including disease-causing mutations that are amplified within specific groups. This unique genetic makeup necessitates the creation of an Indian-specific database to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Creating a Customized Database for Precision Medicine

The GenomeIndia project aims to identify and catalog the genetic variations of diverse Indian populations by sequencing the whole genome of 10,000 healthy individuals from 99 communities, representing all major linguistic and social groups across the country. This database will provide researchers with valuable insights into genetic variants unique to India's population groups. This information can then be utilized to develop customized drugs and therapies, enabling precision medicine and improved healthcare outcomes.

Collaboration and Transparency

Beyond the sheer scale of sequencing and establishing a reference genome, the GenomeIndia project also emphasizes transparency and collaboration. A biobank housing 20,000 blood samples has been established at the Centre for Brain Research, while data archiving is being carried out at the Indian Biological Data Centre.
