India Ready to Face Global Challenges in 2024: Jaishankar

India is set to face various global challenges in 2024, but External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar believes the country is well-positioned to navigate these challenges and maintain its rising global role.

In a recent address, India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed confidence in India's ability to navigate the challenges of 2024, despite global turbulence. Speaking at the launch of his book, "Why Bharat Matters," Jaishankar highlighted India's favorable political and economic positioning, which will enable the country to maintain its rising global role and development path.

Addressing Global Factors

Jaishankar acknowledged that 2024 is likely to be a turbulent year, with many of the same factors that influenced 2023 remaining in play. However, he emphasized India's strong position to face these challenges with confidence. The country's political and economic standing, coupled with societal changes and growing capabilities, provide a solid foundation for India's continued success.

Reflecting on India-China Relations

Delving into India's engagement with China since Independence, Jaishankar offered a critical perspective on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's policies. He suggested that a more "Bharat-centric" approach could have resulted in a less optimistic view of India's relationship with China, particularly during the first decade after Independence.

Jaishankar cited historical records, including an exchange of letters between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Pandit Nehru, which revealed starkly differing views on China. He also mentioned Pandit Nehru's initial hesitation in accepting assistance from the United States following the 1962 war with China, due to concerns about how it would be perceived.

Economic Reforms and Internal Constraints

Regarding economic reforms, Jaishankar acknowledged that India's initial two decades of reform were not sufficiently sweeping. He pointed out that India fell for the mantra of globalization without reaping the same benefits as those who dominated production and finance.

Addressing internal constraints, Jaishankar acknowledged that much could have been achieved in the period after Independence. He highlighted the need to improve basic social and economic indicators, such as electricity and water connections, literacy rates, gender ratios, nutrition levels, and healthcare systems. He emphasized that India had not fully utilized its potential compared to other countries with similar starting points.

Lessons from Ramayana

In his book, Jaishankar draws parallels between various aspects of geopolitics and statecraft with the epic Ramayana. He emphasized the importance of reliable friends and allies, citing the example of Laxman's role in supporting Rama. Jaishankar believes that countries are better served when they have trustworthy partners who can provide support and guidance when needed.

As India navigates the challenges of 2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's insights provide a thoughtful perspective on the country's strengths and opportunities. By reflecting on historical experiences, economic reforms, and internal constraints, India can continue to build on its strong position and play a significant role in shaping the global landscape.
