India-US To Sign ₹32,000 Crore Drone Agreement

India and the United States are poised to finalise a significant defence agreement. This deal, valued at Rs 32,000 crore, involves acquiring 31 Predator drones and establishing a maintenance facility in India. The Cabinet Committee on Security recently approved this acquisition, which will enhance the surveillance capabilities of India's armed forces.

The distribution of these drones will see 15 allocated to the Indian Navy. The remaining drones will be equally divided between the Air Force and the Army. The formal signing of the Foreign Military Sales contract with the US government is scheduled for tomorrow, according to defence officials.

Key Defence Officials Involved

An American delegation comprising military and corporate representatives has arrived in India for this occasion. High-ranking Indian defence officials, including the Joint Secretary and Acquisition Manager for naval systems, are expected to attend the signing ceremony.

Discussions between India and the US regarding this deal have been ongoing for several years. The final obstacles were resolved recently at a Defence Acquisition Council meeting. It was crucial to finalise the agreement before October 31 due to the proposal's validity period.

Strategic Drone Deployment

The Indian military plans to station these drones at four strategic locations: INS Rajali near Chennai, Porbandar in Gujarat, Sarsawa, and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. This deployment strategy aims to bolster India's surveillance capabilities across different regions.

This acquisition is part of a tri-services deal with the US. The number of drones was determined by a scientific study conducted by India's armed forces. This strategic decision underscores India's commitment to enhancing its defence capabilities through advanced technology.

The upcoming signing marks a significant milestone in Indo-US defence relations. It reflects both nations' shared commitment to strengthening security cooperation and technological collaboration in critical areas.
