India and Singapore Can Demonstrate Effective Trust-Building in Today's Global Economy

India is gaining prominence as a key player in the global economy, according to Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. He expressed his country's desire to collaborate with India to demonstrate how trust can be built in a world marked by uncertainty and division. Shanmugaratnam highlighted that both nations share similar priorities, focusing on trust-building rather than specific industries.

India-Singapore: A Trust-Building Model

Collaborative Efforts and Economic Growth

India's demographics and development processes make it an attractive partner for Singapore. The two countries are working together under the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable to develop India's semiconductor ecosystem. Singapore is exploring its role in this ecosystem and considering new industrial parks, with Sembcorp actively seeking potential sites.

Shanmugaratnam also emphasised the importance of skills development for India's future. Singapore, with its experience in this area, aims to contribute to India's skill ecosystem. Sustainability is another shared priority, with India poised to become a significant producer of green ammonia due to its solar and wind energy resources.

Expanding Air Services and Aviation Opportunities

The expansion of the air service agreement between India and Singapore is under consideration. The agreement was last revised a decade ago, and Shanmugaratnam sees benefits for both countries' economies in updating it. He noted India's potential in the aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector, an area where Singapore excels.

During his visit to Odisha, Shanmugaratnam observed the state's aspirations for development. Despite having a lower per capita income than the national average, Odisha is eager to collaborate with Singapore on projects related to skills, petrochemicals, industrial parks, sustainability, IT, FinTech, semiconductors, AI, and InsureTech.

Odisha's Development Aspirations

Odisha's unique blend of Hinduism and Buddhism heritage and its attractive coastline present significant investment opportunities in tourism. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described Shanmugaratnam's visit as a milestone for the state's development. Eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit, setting clear goals for Odisha's progress.

Majhi highlighted that these MoUs aim to elevate Odisha to match leading countries in relevant sectors. To achieve development by 2036, the state government is investing heavily in infrastructure. Majhi had previously invited Shanmugaratnam during his visit to Singapore, resulting in this collaborative engagement.

Both nations are committed to ensuring secure data flow between their financial institutions. Leaders from both countries are engaging closely, with businesses eager to explore new opportunities. The collaboration between India and Singapore signifies a new level of cooperation aimed at mutual growth and development.
