India Secures 6-Month US Waiver on Iran’s Chabahar Port Project, Says MEA

India has secured a fresh six-month exemption from US sanctions on Iran's Chabahar Port, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed. The waiver allows India to keep advancing development work at the strategically significant port until April 2026, safeguarding New Delhi's key connectivity and trade initiatives across Central Asia.

Waiver Shields India's Port Operations and Investments

The renewed exemption means India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) can continue its operations at the Shahid Beheshti terminal in Chabahar without facing penalties under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act (IFCA). The original waiver, introduced in 2018, recognized Chabahar's crucial humanitarian and logistical role, especially in providing Afghanistan and Central Asia with an alternative trade route that bypasses Pakistan.

The MEA noted that the extension ensures India's ongoing commitments under the ten-year partnership deal signed in May 2024 stay intact. Under the agreement, IPGL pledged $370 million in total investment for infrastructure improvements, out of which over $120 million has already been utilized to enhance facilities and expand links to the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

"The government remains committed to the full development of Chabahar Port," the MEA said, highlighting that the facility has already supported shipments of wheat and urea to Afghanistan, reinforcing its importance as a humanitarian and trade link for the region.

Talks Continue on India-US Trade Pact

The ministry also addressed ongoing discussions between India and the United States to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement, indicating that talks are progressing steadily.

"We continue to remain engaged with the US side on finalising the trade deal. Both sides are continuing to hold discussions. For any further update, I would refer you to the Ministry of Commerce," the MEA spokesperson said.

This engagement underscores New Delhi's balancing act-strengthening strategic partnerships with Washington while safeguarding critical projects involving nations like Iran.

Chabahar's Expanding Role in Regional Connectivity

Situated on Iran's southeastern coast along the Gulf of Oman, Chabahar Port serves as the country's only direct access point to the Indian Ocean. Roughly 950 kilometers from Afghanistan, the port acts as a gateway to landlocked Central Asian nations and has earned the title of the region's "Golden Gate."

For India, the port carries immense geopolitical weight as it provides a counterbalance to China's Gwadar Port in neighboring Pakistan. Its significance was first solidified when the Trump administration granted India a sanctions waiver in 2018, acknowledging the project's contribution to stability and humanitarian access in the region.

While renewed US restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities had sparked uncertainty about Chabahar's operations, the latest waiver reaffirms the port's protected status as both a strategic and humanitarian initiative vital for regional growth and security.
