Iranian Envoy Highlights India's Potential Role in De-escalating West Asia Conflicts
Iranian Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, highlighted India's potential role in reducing tensions in West Asia. His comments came amid rising conflicts involving Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas. Elahi noted that while Iran is closely communicating with Russia and China, it has not directly engaged with India. However, Iran has invited India and other influential nations to urge Israel to de-escalate the situation.

Elahi emphasised Iran's desire for regional peace and stability over dominance by any single nation. He stated, "We believe that the region needs peace and stability. We, as Iran, want a powerful region, instead of a powerful country." He also expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Palestine, stating it cannot be ignored or overlooked.
India's Role in West Asia
The ambassador acknowledged India's longstanding friendship with both Iran and Israel. He pointed out that India's relationship with Iran spans 2,000 years, unlike its relatively newer ties with Israel. Elahi believes India can leverage its influence as a major power and voice of the Global South to help ease tensions in the region.
Regarding recent military actions between Iran and Israel, Elahi explained that missile strikes on Israeli military bases were meant to convey a strong message. He asserted that these strikes were effective. The Iranian commander has made it clear that any attack on Iranian interests will be met with a robust response.
Iran's Strategic Position
Elahi described Iran's geographical significance, noting its extensive coastline of over 4,000 kilometres along its southern border. He mentioned Chabahar Port's location in southeast Iran, far from Mediterranean and West Asian conflict zones. This ensures the safety of the international corridor crucial for India-Iran connectivity.
The ambassador assured that Iran remains safe for Indians, Iranians, and other nationals. He reiterated that the backbone of India-Iran relations—connectivity—is secure despite regional tensions.
Elahi expressed hope that India would use its capabilities to promote de-escalation in West Asia. He underscored the importance of peace as a prerequisite for regional development and stability.
