LiFE Movement: A Catalyst for Change

The resolution builds upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement, which encourages countries to embrace planet-friendly living practices and move away from excessive consumerism. Prime Minister Modi introduced this concept at the World Leaders Summit during the UN climate conference in Glasgow and subsequently launched Mission LiFE on October 20, 2022, in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Reaffirming Commitments to Sustainable Development

The UNEA resolution reaffirms the commitments outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasizing the three dimensions of sustainable development: integrated, indivisible, interdependent, and mutually reinforcing. It underscores the importance of ensuring that all individuals acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to promote sustainable development and have access to relevant information and awareness to foster lifestyles in harmony with nature.

Recognizing the Potential of Sustainable Lifestyles

The resolution acknowledges the potential of behavioral changes towards sustainable lifestyles in contributing to the achievement of the three dimensions of sustainable development. It takes note of the work of the 10-year framework programme, including the One Planet Network Programme on sustainable lifestyles and education, along with other international, regional, and national initiatives. The resolution also recognizes the value of successful national initiatives as models for replication.

Collaboration and Empowerment for Sustainable Lifestyles

The resolution emphasizes the crucial role of various stakeholders, including the private sector, industry, local authorities, local communities, and Indigenous people, in supporting more sustainable lifestyles. It acknowledges that eradicating poverty in all its forms is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development, leaving no one behind.

The resolution encourages member states and invites other stakeholders to create evidence-based enabling conditions for sustainable lifestyles. It calls for fostering public and private collaboration, pursuing education at all levels, and implementing awareness-raising initiatives to empower citizens to make informed choices about sustainable lifestyles, as referenced in SDG 4.7 Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship.

Promoting Cooperation and Sharing Best Practices

The resolution encourages member states, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and other stakeholders to promote and enhance cooperation by sharing information, best practices, research, and literature. This cooperation aims to facilitate the adoption of more sustainable lifestyles, including sustainable living. It also calls for supporting member states, upon request, in developing and implementing national or regional action plans for promoting sustainable lifestyles or integrating them into existing action plans.

Regional Dialogues and Progress Reporting

The resolution requests the UNEP Executive Director, in partnership with UN Regional Commissions, to undertake regional dialogues discussing sustainable lifestyle practices in the context of nature's values and approaches. These dialogues aim to enable sustainable lifestyles that promote living in harmony with nature or Mother Earth, as recognized by some countries and regions. The resolution requests a report to be submitted to inform UNEA's seventh session on these dialogues and the progress of the present resolution.

India's resolution on sustainable lifestyles adopted by the UN Environment Assembly marks a significant milestone in the global effort to promote environmentally friendly living practices. By recognizing the potential of behavioral changes, fostering collaboration, and empowering citizens, the resolution sets the stage for a more sustainable future for all.
