India Plotted To Oust Maldivian President Muizzu? Here's What A Report Claimed
In a revelation that sent ripples through the international community, The Washington Post disclosed allegations of a plot by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to unseat Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu. The scheme reportedly involved soliciting a staggering USD 6 million from India to bribe 40 members of the Maldivian Parliament, including those within Muizzu's own party, to secure the necessary votes for his impeachment. Despite the intricate planning outlined in the 'Democratic Renewal Initiative' document, the plot ultimately did not come to fruition.
The attempt to involve India in the impeachment plan underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region. The document suggested that by January 2024, figures associated with India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) had initiated secret negotiations with Maldivian opposition figures about the potential removal of Muizzu. These discussions led to a proposal that, despite months of clandestine conversations, failed to gain the required support within the Maldivian Parliament to proceed with the impeachment.

India's Alleged Role and Response
The allegations sparked questions regarding India's involvement and whether the plan had received the green light from senior officials in Delhi. The report highlighted the lack of confirmation on India's stance towards supporting the impeachment, adding a layer of uncertainty to the claims. In response to the allegations, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had not issued a statement at the time the article was published.
Reactions to the Allegations
Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, responding to the revelations, categorically denied India's involvement in any plot against President Muizzu. Through a tweet, Nasheed emphasized India's unwavering support for Maldivian democracy and refuted the idea that India would endorse such a move. "India has never dictated terms to us, either," Nasheed added, dismissing the notion that external influences could sway the opposition's actions in the Maldives.
Despite the plot's failure to materialize, the scheme outlined in the 'Democratic Renewal Initiative' document included detailed strategies not only to bribe parliament members but also to involve senior military and police officials. The plan even contemplated enlisting the support of three influential criminal gangs within the country to ensure the successful removal of Muizzu from office.
The Political Landscape in Maldives
The political landscape of the Maldives has been characterized by its fluctuating relationship with India, especially under the leadership of President Muizzu. Following his election victory in April, where his party, the People's National Congress (PNC), secured a commanding majority, Muizzu's administration initially leaned towards China, echoing the sentiment of his "India Out" campaign. This stance called for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, sparking tensions between the two nations.
A Shift Towards Reconciliation
However, a notable shift towards mending bilateral ties emerged during President Muizzu's visit to India in October. This visit highlighted the critical role that India plays in the Maldives' development, with both nations signing a currency swap agreement to aid the Maldivian economy. President Muizzu's comment, "India is a key partner in the socio-economic and infrastructure development of the Maldives and has stood by us during our times of need," marked a significant pivot in the relationship between the two countries, signaling a potential thaw in previously icy relations.
