India Takes Centre Stage as Guest of Honour at Bogotá International Book Fair 2026

India has taken a prominent place on the global literary map as the Guest of Honour Country at the Bogotá International Book Fair 2026 (FILBo), being held from April 21 to May 4 in Bogotá, Colombia. Recognised as one of the world’s leading book fairs, FILBo brings together authors, publishers, editors, translators and readers from across the globe, featuring more than 2,000 activities and participation from nearly 25 countries.

The India Pavilion was inaugurated on April 21 by Colombia’s Minister of Culture, Arts and Knowledge, Yannai Kadamani Fonrodona, along with India’s Ambassador to Colombia and Ecuador, Vanlalhuma. India’s participation is being organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Colombia, with the National Book Trust (NBT) as the implementing agency.

A 50-member Indian delegation, comprising authors, illustrators, artists, publishers and officials, is participating in the event under the leadership of NBT Chairman Prof. Milind Sudhakar Marathe. Officials highlighted that India’s presence at FILBo offers an opportunity to connect Indian literature with Latin American audiences and strengthen cultural ties.

A Grand Showcase of Indian Culture and Literature

Spread across 3,000 square metres, the India Pavilion presents a vibrant blend of India’s literary heritage, cultural diversity and contemporary achievements. The pavilion’s theme, “Read and Explore India,” invites visitors to experience India through over 100 literary sessions, exhibitions, cultural performances and audio-visual showcases.

The design incorporates elements inspired by Indian art and architecture, including spaces modelled on Amber Fort, Kerala’s Nalukettu style and Hampi Bazaar. A distinctive mascot created in Kalighat art symbolises storytelling within families, while the pavilion’s facade features kites, representing shared cultural motifs between India and Colombia.

Theme of Reflection and ‘Silence’

The 2026 edition of FILBo revolves around the theme “Listening to Each Other is Reading Each Other,” focusing on silence, reflection and understanding. The India Pavilion aligns with this theme through curated exhibitions and dedicated sessions exploring silence in Indian philosophy, meditation and knowledge traditions.

Curated Exhibitions Highlight India’s Legacy

Seven major exhibitions form the core of the pavilion, showcasing India’s civilisational depth and modern achievements. These include displays on Indian women thinkers from ancient to modern times, the literary and intellectual legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, and iconic voices of modern Indian literature such as Rabindranath Tagore, Premchand and Mahadevi Varma.

Other exhibitions explore India’s knowledge systems, illustration traditions, and contemporary progress in areas such as space exploration and infrastructure. A special exhibition by a Colombian photographer presents a visual narrative of the Himalayas, further strengthening cultural exchange.

Over 100 Events and Cultural Performances

The India Pavilion is hosting more than 100 events, including literary discussions, poetry readings, children’s workshops and cultural performances. Over 75 Indian and Colombian speakers are participating, covering topics such as Indian knowledge systems, cinema, multilingual literature, artificial intelligence and India–Colombia relations. Film screenings of popular Indian movies and documentaries are also part of the programme, offering Colombian audiences a glimpse into India’s storytelling traditions.

Focus on Translation and Global Reach

A key highlight of India’s participation is the launch of over 50 Indian children’s books translated into Spanish, including several bilingual editions. This initiative aims to introduce Indian stories to Latin American readers and expand the global reach of Indian literature.

Cultural Immersion and Interactive Experience

Visitors to the pavilion can explore nearly 3,000 books across genres, interactive children’s zones, storytelling sessions and creative workshops. The space also features AI-enabled kiosks, audio-visual booths and themed selfie points, along with an India-inspired restaurant showcasing diverse cuisines. Traditional dance performances such as Bharatanatyam and Kathak, along with folk dances from Rajasthan and Hindustani classical music concerts, are providing audiences with an immersive cultural experience.

India’s participation at FILBo 2026 underscores its growing role as a global cultural and knowledge hub. By bringing together literature, art, ideas and innovation, the India Pavilion not only celebrates the country’s rich heritage but also strengthens cultural and intellectual ties between India and Colombia.
