Rajya Sabha Unanimously Passes Landmark Women's Reservation Bill: A Giant Leap for Indian Democracy
The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, a watershed bill reserving one-third of seats for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, has been unanimously approved by the Rajya Sabha. It marks a major milestone on India's journey towards gender equality.
On September 21, a landmark legislation was passed in India's Parliament, marking a significant stride towards gender equality in the nation's political landscape. The bill, known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam or the 128th Constitution amendment bill, proposes to reserve one-third of seats in both Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. This historic development received unanimous support from lawmakers present in Rajya Sabha while only two of the 456 MPs present voted against it in Lok Sabha.
The Unanimous Support

In an unprecedented show of unity across party lines, all 214 lawmakers present at Rajya Sabha voted favourably for this watershed legislation on Thursday. In comparison to this, two out of the total 456 MPs who were present during voting session at Lok Sabha opposed it. Nevertheless, the overwhelming majority support underlines India's commitment to foster greater female representation within its political corridors.
The Prime Minister’s Acknowledgement
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude towards Members of Parliament (MPs) for their endorsement of this critical piece of legislation. He emphasized that such spirit would instill newfound self-confidence among Indian citizens and acknowledged that all MPs and political parties had played an instrumental role in bringing about this change.
A Step Towards Implementation
Despite receiving parliamentary approval, there are still steps to be taken before the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam can come into effect fully. It must first gain approval from a majority of state assemblies across India. Subsequently, it will be implemented following a delimitation exercise scheduled for next year which aims to redraw parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on census data.
A Milestone Achievement
Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar hailed the passage of this bill as a 'milestone in the nation's journey towards empowering Nari Shakti'. His statement reflects the collective sentiment of lawmakers who view this legislation as a significant step forward in India's ongoing endeavour to empower women, particularly within the political sphere. The unanimous support for such an important piece of legislation across party lines is indeed a testament to India's commitment to gender equality.
In conclusion, the passing of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam marks an important milestone in Indian politics and its pursuit towards achieving greater gender parity. While there are still steps that need to be taken before it comes into full effect, its unanimous approval by lawmakers sends out a clear message about India’s dedication towards promoting female representation in politics. This move not only empowers women but also strengthens democracy by ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented within policy-making bodies.
