India On Alert: Govt Monitoring China's Pneumonia Outbreak

The Union health ministry is actively monitoring a recent outbreak in China causing respiratory illness among children. In a statement, the ministry reassured that India faces low risks from both avian influenza and clusters of respiratory illness.

According to the ministry, India stands prepared to address any emerging situations arising from this development. The ministry took note of media reports concerning a cluster outbreak of mysterious respiratory illness in children in northern China, also acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO). They emphasized India's readiness for any unforeseen circumstances.

India On Alert: Govt Monitoring Chinas Pneumonia Outbreak

As per the available information, China has witnessed a surge in respiratory diseases in recent weeks, primarily attributed to typical causes without identification of any unusual pathogen or unexpected clinical signs, the health ministry stated.

Discussing the H9N2 (Avian influenza virus) case reported to WHO from China in October 2023, the ministry highlighted WHO's overall risk assessment, indicating a low probability of human-to-human transmission and low fatality among reported human cases. However, the ministry stressed the necessity for enhanced surveillance across human, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors, emphasizing the importance of improved coordination.

Regarding the rise in respiratory illness among children in northern China, the World Health Organization sought further details. China responded, attributing the cases not to an unknown pathogen but rather to the relaxation of Covid restrictions.
