India Mpox Advisory: Health Ministry Alerts Airports And Border Ports Amid Global Emergency

The Union health ministry has issued a directive to all airports and land ports along the borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan, urging heightened vigilance for incoming passengers exhibiting symptoms of Mpox.

This instruction, reported by PTI, comes in response to the recent declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) of Mpox as a global public health emergency due to a new, more virulent variant of the virus, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Designated Hospitals and Preparedness Measures

In response to the Mpox outbreak, which has resulted in a significant number of cases and deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo since January 2023, the health ministry has designated specific hospitals in Delhi as central points for managing and treating Mpox cases, as reported by Hindustan Times.

These hospitals include Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Hospital. All state governments have been directed to identify similar specialized hospitals within their jurisdictions to handle potential cases of Mpox.

Global and National Context

The WHO's decision to label Mpox a global public health emergency highlights the severity of the outbreak, which has seen more than 27,000 cases and over 1,100 deaths, primarily affecting children in Congo. The virus's emergence and the new variant's increased virulence have prompted global concern and the need for enhanced preventive measures.

National Preparedness and Surveillance

On Sunday, PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened a high-level meeting to assess and review India's preparedness for Mpox. This meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening surveillance systems for the early detection of Mpox cases.

Currently, 32 laboratories across India are equipped to conduct Mpox testing. The health ministry has instructed these laboratories to ensure readiness for prompt and accurate diagnosis. Despite no reported cases of Mpox in India to date, officials are to enhance their surveillance capabilities and ensure that all protocols for the disease's prevention and treatment are widely disseminated, as reported by Hindustan Times.

An awareness campaign targeting healthcare providers has been advised to ensure timely reporting and effective response to potential Mpox cases.

Ongoing Measures and Recommendations

The health ministry's directives include enhancing surveillance measures and ensuring that protocols for preventing and treating Mpox are disseminated broadly. The importance of running an awareness campaign among healthcare providers about Mpox symptoms and the need for timely notification to the surveillance system has been stressed.

This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that India is well-prepared to handle any potential outbreak of Mpox effectively and to mitigate the risk of widespread transmission. In summary, the Union health ministry's proactive measures reflect a commitment to managing the Mpox outbreak through heightened vigilance, preparedness, and effective communication strategies, as per media reports.
