India's Defence Chiefs Convene to Expedite Joint Military Operations Plan

India is on the brink of a significant transformation in its defence strategy, with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan emphasizing the urgency of enhancing jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This push towards a unified approach was highlighted during a two-day conclave that concluded on Friday, focusing on the implementation of the ambitious theaterisation plan.

Chiefs Review Joint Forces Plan

The Parivartan Chintan II conclave saw the participation of high-ranking military officials including Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary, and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. The event served as a platform for extensive deliberations on rolling out the theaterisation plan, aiming to create a multi-domain response mechanism within the Indian armed forces.

During the conclave, Gen Chauhan addressed senior officers from the Department of Military Affairs, Integrated Defence Staff, and various sub-committees of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC). He underscored the importance of accelerating the process towards achieving jointness and integration across the services. The discussions revolved around vital reforms and updates on progress from various COSC sub-committees, deemed imperative for the envisioned transformation.

The defense ministry highlighted Gen Chauhan's confidence in the brainstorming sessions at the conclave aiding in evolving the armed forces into a theaterised force capable of multi-domain operations. This evolution is crucial for strengthening India's ability to safeguard its territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently indicated that consensus is emerging among the three services regarding the theaterisation initiative. This model aims to integrate the capabilities of the Army, Air Force, and Navy to ensure optimal resource utilization for wars and operations. Under this plan, each theatre command will encompass units from all three services, working cohesively over specified geographical territories.

Currently, India's military operates through separate commands for each service. The proposed theatre commands seek to unify these capabilities, marking a significant shift towards a more integrated defence posture. The CDS has been mandated with spearheading this transformative initiative, reflecting India's commitment to bolstering its military effectiveness through enhanced jointness and integration.
