India and Maldives Commit to Mutual Interests and Sensitivity in Bilateral Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently held discussions with his Maldivian counterpart, Moosa Zameer, emphasizing the mutual interests and reciprocal sensitivity that form the foundation of India-Maldives relations. This dialogue comes at a crucial time, following a noticeable cooling in the bilateral relationship since Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, became president six months ago.

India-Maldives Strengthen Ties

Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the Neighbourhood First policy and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, which guide India's approach to its relations with neighboring countries, including the Maldives. The meeting aimed to align both nations' perspectives across various domains further.

The bilateral ties faced challenges due to President Muizzu's insistence on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives. The Indian government has complied, withdrawing most of its military staff by the deadline set by Muizzu for May 10. Following this, India has sent competent technical personnel to operate three Indian aviation platforms in the Maldives.

During his talks, Jaishankar also underscored India's role as a key provider of development assistance to the Maldives. He detailed various projects ranging from infrastructure and social initiatives to medical evacuation and health facilities that have significantly contributed to improving the quality of life in the Maldives.

Furthermore, Jaishankar mentioned India's financial support and its role as a First Responder during emergencies in the Maldives. He highlighted how cooperation between the two countries has bolstered security and well-being through shared activities, equipment provisioning, capacity building, and training.

The discussions between Jaishankar and Zameer also covered development partnership, capacity building, and training initiatives. On the topic of Indian military personnel's withdrawal from the Maldives, it was noted that both nations are collaborating to ensure the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms essential for humanitarian and medical evacuation services.

The Maldivian Foreign Ministry stated that the meeting addressed all aspects of the India-Maldives partnership, laying groundwork for future collaboration. Both ministers expressed their commitment to working closely together on mutual interest areas, both bilaterally and internationally.

They acknowledged the economic partnership's success and noted significant progress in projects facilitated through Indian grant assistance and line of credit initiatives. Zameer expressed gratitude for India's support in advancing economic, trade, and investment ties and its role in the socioeconomic advancement of the Maldives. Additionally, India has increased its quota for essential goods imports to the Maldives for one year, marking a significant enhancement from previous years.

Zameer's visit to India symbolizes strong support and commitment between the two countries, heralding new collaboration initiatives that signify enduring friendship and shared goals.
