India and Kuwait Establish Joint Commission to Enhance Bilateral Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors
India and Kuwait have agreed to establish a joint commission at the foreign ministers' level. This commission will serve as a comprehensive framework to review and oversee their bilateral relations. This decision emerged from discussions between India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Kuwait's Foreign Minister Abudullah Ali Al Yahya, who is on his first official visit to India.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the ministers examined various aspects of India-Kuwait relations. These include trade, investment, energy, food security, and cultural exchanges. They also discussed regional and international matters of shared interest, particularly focusing on West Asia.
Joint Commission for Cooperation
An agreement was signed to create a Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) at the foreign ministers' level. The MEA highlighted that this mechanism will act as an umbrella to review and monitor bilateral ties comprehensively. New working groups will be established in fields such as trade, investment, education, technology, agriculture, security, and culture.
The JCC will also integrate existing working groups in areas like hydrocarbons, health, and consular affairs. This initiative aims to strengthen the institutional framework for cooperation between the two nations.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
During his visit, Foreign Minister Yahya met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi emphasised the historical connections between India and Kuwait. He expressed gratitude towards Kuwait's leadership for supporting the Indian community of over a million people residing there.
In a social media post, Jaishankar described his meeting with Yahya as productive. "Discussed the multifaceted India-Kuwait relations and ways to further expand ties. The agreement signed today to institute a Joint Commission for Cooperation #JCC will surely supplant these efforts," he mentioned.
Historical Relations
The MEA noted that India and Kuwait share traditionally friendly relations rooted in history. These ties have endured over time, with regular exchanges reflecting their mutual importance. The Indian community in Kuwait acts as a living bridge, fostering strong people-to-people connections between the two countries.
The establishment of the JCC marks a significant step in enhancing cooperation between India and Kuwait across various sectors. It underscores both nations' commitment to strengthening their longstanding relationship through structured dialogue and collaboration.
