India, Japan Strengthen Maritime Defence Ties During Navy Chief Admiral Tripathi's Strategic Visit

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, India's Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), engaged in extensive high-level discussions with Japan's Defence Minister Gen Nakatani in Tokyo, reaffirming the deepening defence relationship and maritime cooperation between the two nations during his official visit from July 30 to August 2, 2025.

The bilateral dialogue between Admiral Tripathi and Defence Minister Nakatani covered key areas designed to enhance defence collaboration. They emphasised expanding technological cooperation, fostering robust partnerships between Indian and Japanese defence industries, and boosting naval training and personnel exchanges.

Both sides emphasised their shared commitment to addressing regional security challenges, particularly within the Indo-Pacific theatre. The discussions represented a significant advancement in strategic alignment and operational synergy, highlighting the mutual vision of India and Japan for regional stability and security.

Complementing the bilateral discussions, Admiral Tripathi toured the advanced JMSDF Mogami-class frigate Kumano, a symbol of Japan's next-generation naval capability. He received comprehensive briefings on the frigate's advanced stealth design, multi-mission versatility, and sophisticated maritime surveillance and combat systems.

Admiral Tripathi also visited Japan United Marine Shipyard (JUMS), a premier Japanese shipbuilding facility, where he was briefed on cutting-edge ship construction techniques, automation processes, and industrial expertise. Furthermore, his visit to JMSDF's Fleet Headquarters and Maritime Operations Center provided insights into Japan's maritime domain awareness strategies, operational structure, and strategic maritime objectives.

Officials noted that Admiral Tripathi's visit reinforces the broader "Special Strategic and Global Partnership" framework shared by India and Japan, with maritime security and cooperation being central pillars reflecting their aligned strategic outlook.

The CNS will continue his engagements by interacting with senior JMSDF commanders at Funakoshi JMSDF Base, a strategically important operational hub. These interactions are aimed at further enhancing interoperability and collaborative capabilities between the two naval forces.
