India and International Solar Alliance Sign Agreement for Solar Projects in Four Indo-Pacific Countries
A new agreement has been established between the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to implement solar projects in Fiji, Comoros, Madagascar, and Seychelles. This agreement, signed on November 26, aims to enhance energy access and reliability in these regions. The ISA will act as the Project Implementing Agency, with India providing financial support.

The Wilmington Declaration, released at the Quad Leaders Summit in Delaware on September 21, highlighted the Quad countries' commitment to promoting clean energy investments. India has pledged USD 2 million towards solar initiatives in these Indo-Pacific nations. The focus is on addressing energy challenges such as unreliable electricity supply and perishability of agricultural products.
Focus on Solar Energy Projects
The solar projects under consideration include cold storage solutions, solarisation of healthcare facilities, and solar water pumping systems. These initiatives aim to improve energy access and create employment opportunities in remote areas where grid power is unavailable. The MEA stated that these projects would provide reliable power supply and support economic development.
According to an ISA study, the targeted countries face significant energy issues affecting agriculture and healthcare sectors. By implementing solar solutions, these challenges can be mitigated, leading to improved social justice and economic growth. The projects are expected to contribute significantly to the transition towards a clean energy economy.
Commitment to Clean Energy Transition
India's investment in these solar projects aligns with the Quad's goals of addressing climate change challenges. By facilitating clean energy transitions, these efforts aim to ensure shared prosperity for people and the planet. The successful execution of these projects will demonstrate a commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
The unequal access to reliable energy sources has hindered comprehensive economic progress globally. Solar energy presents a viable solution for addressing climate change-related issues in these regions. This initiative underscores India's dedication to supporting clean energy advancements in partner countries.
The collaboration between MEA and ISA marks a significant step towards enhancing energy security in Fiji, Comoros, Madagascar, and Seychelles. By focusing on renewable energy solutions, this partnership aims to foster sustainable development and improve quality of life in these Indo-Pacific nations.
