New Delhi, December 22: India has assumed the role of co-chair of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Working Groups on Maritime Security and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) for the upcoming cycle. The eighth IONS Conclave of Chiefs was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from December 19 to 22, with the participation of chiefs of navies and senior delegates from 27 member and observer countries.

Indian Navy Chief Attends Conclave

Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, accompanied by a three-member naval delegation, attended the conclave. During the event, Thailand assumed the duties of chair of IONS, and the work plan for the next two years was finalized. Notably, a flag designed by India was selected as the official IONS flag.

India's Role in IONS

In addition to co-chairing the IONS Working Groups on Maritime Security and HADR, India also welcomed the Republic of Korea Navy as the latest observer, bringing the total membership of IONS to 25 members and nine observers.

Visit to INS Kadmatt

During his time in Bangkok, Admiral Kumar visited INS Kadmatt, where he interacted with the ship's crew and commended their successful long-range deployment. The ship's visit coincided with the IONS conclave, symbolizing the Indian Navy's commitment to the Indian Ocean Region multilateral construct of the 21st century.

India's active participation in IONS reflects its commitment to regional cooperation and maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region. By taking on leadership roles and contributing to the work of the organization, India is playing a vital role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
