India to Host the 28th Conference of Commonwealth Parliaments in 2024, Focusing on AI and Inclusivity
During a meeting of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliaments of Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC) in Guernsey, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla advocated for integrating artificial intelligence and social media into parliamentary functions. This gathering was part of the standing committee's discussions, with India set to host the 28th CSPOC next year.

Birla noted that India is undergoing significant changes across various sectors, including agriculture, fintech, AI, and research and innovation. He mentioned that delegates attending the CSPOC would witness a unique combination of India's heritage and progress. Last year, the Lok Sabha incorporated AI and machine learning technologies to improve parliamentary proceedings' accessibility for lawmakers.
Technological Advancements in Parliament
The adoption of advanced technologies like AI and ML has enabled regional language translations for Members of Parliament. These technologies also facilitate the availability of parliamentary documents in multiple languages. Birla emphasised the need for parliaments to become more effective, inclusive, and transparent to tackle global issues such as climate change, terrorism, and cybercrime.
Birla underscored the significance of making parliamentary institutions more effective, inclusive, and transparent to encourage good governance and sustainable development. He described the CSPOC platform as an invaluable opportunity for member countries to share best practices, enhance parliamentary cooperation, and work together towards a just and equitable future.
India's Role in CSPOC
India's selection as the host for the 28th CSPOC in 2026 offers a chance to highlight its rich cultural heritage and longstanding traditions of inclusivity and harmony. India has previously hosted the CSPOC in 1970-71, 1986, and 2010. This event will allow India to showcase its advancements while celebrating its historical roots.
Birla stated that hosting the CSPOC provides an opportunity to demonstrate India's progress in various sectors while maintaining its cultural richness. He highlighted that this event would allow delegates to experience India's unique blend of tradition and modernity.
"The CSPOC platform is an invaluable opportunity for member countries to exchange best practices," Birla said. "It strengthens parliamentary cooperation and collectively works towards building a just and equitable future."
In conclusion, Birla's remarks at the CSPOC meeting highlighted India's commitment to integrating technology into parliamentary processes. The upcoming hosting of the CSPOC will further showcase India's cultural heritage alongside its technological advancements.
