75 Indians Evacuated From Syria Following Recent Overthrow Of Assad Regime

75 Indian nationals were evacuated from Syria by India on Tuesday. This action came two days after rebel forces toppled President Bashar Assad's government.

The evacuation was managed by the Indian embassies in Damascus and Beirut, following a security assessment, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The MEA confirmed that the evacuees included 44 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir who were stuck at Saida Zainab. All evacuees have safely crossed into Lebanon and will return to India on available commercial flights. The MEA emphasised that the safety of Indian nationals abroad is a top priority.

Rebel Forces Seize Control

The Syrian government fell on Sunday when rebels captured Damascus after taking several key cities and towns. Assad fled as the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of the capital, ending his family's 50-year rule. Russian media reported that Assad is now in Moscow seeking asylum.

Assad's nearly 14-year rule was characterised by civil war, violence, and harsh repression of political opponents. The MEA stated on Monday that it is closely monitoring the situation in Syria and supports a peaceful, inclusive Syrian-led political process for the future.

Continued Monitoring and Advice

The Indian government will keep a close watch on developments in Syria. Indian nationals still in Syria are advised to maintain contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus for their safety. The MEA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the security of its citizens abroad.

The recent upheaval in Syria has led to significant changes in its political landscape. The swift capture of Damascus by rebel forces marks a pivotal moment in the country's history, as it transitions from decades of Assad family rule.

India's swift evacuation efforts highlight its commitment to protecting its citizens during international crises. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing developments being closely monitored by global observers.
