India Commits $1 Million to UNESCO for World Heritage Conservation: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that India will donate USD 1 million to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. This contribution aims to support capacity building, technical assistance, and the conservation of world heritage sites. Modi made this announcement during the opening ceremony of the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC).

Indias $1M Pledge to UNESCO Heritage

India is hosting this significant UNESCO event for the first time, from July 21 to July 31. Modi was accompanied on stage by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

India's Commitment to Global Heritage

Modi emphasised India's dedication to preserving global heritage. He highlighted India's cooperation in heritage conservation in countries of the Global South. Specific examples include Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Cham Temples in Vietnam, and the Stupa in Bagan, Myanmar.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that a certificate programme in World Heritage Management is being introduced for young professionals in India. He expressed confidence that India's cultural and creative industries will significantly contribute to global growth.

Global Initiatives and Cultural Heritage

Modi underscored India's role in promoting global welfare through initiatives like yoga and ayurveda. He described these practices as part of India's scientific heritage. He also recalled the theme of the G-20 Summit hosted by India: "One World, One Family, One Future."

The Prime Minister explained that India's vision of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" stems from treating Earth as a mother and humans as its children. He highlighted initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and Mission LiFE as examples of this philosophy.

Support for Countries of the Global South

The USD 1 million grant to UNESCO will be particularly beneficial for countries of the Global South. Modi reiterated India's commitment to supporting these nations in their heritage conservation efforts.

"India considers preservation of global heritage as its responsibility," Modi stated during his address. This sentiment reflects India's broader commitment to global cooperation and cultural preservation.

The Prime Minister's announcements at the WHC session underline India's proactive role in global heritage conservation. The initiatives discussed aim to foster international collaboration and support sustainable development through cultural preservation.
