India Set to Deliver First Batch of BrahMos Missiles to Philippines This Friday

India is poised to make a significant stride in its defence export capabilities by delivering the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines this Friday. This move comes more than two years after the two nations signed a USD 375 million agreement for the supply of these advanced weapon systems. The delivery signifies India's inaugural export of the BrahMos missile, marking a milestone in its defence relations with the Southeast Asian country.

The dispatch will be facilitated by a military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force, which is expected to transport both the missile and its launchers directly to the Philippines' marine forces. This development follows the January 2022 agreement between India and the Philippines, wherein India committed to supplying three batteries of the missile system. The BrahMos missile, a product of BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd—a joint venture between India and Russia—is renowned for its ability to be launched from various platforms including submarines, ships, aircraft, or land, and achieves speeds of up to 2.8 Mach, nearly three times the speed of sound.

India's decision to export BrahMos missiles extends beyond the Philippines, with countries such as Argentina expressing interest in acquiring this advanced military technology. This expansion in defence exports aligns with India's strategic interests in bolstering defence ties with nations across different regions, amidst growing concerns over China's military activities in the South China Sea.

The South China Sea has been a focal point of international tension due to China's expansive claims over the territory, which is rich in hydrocarbons. This has led to disputes with several countries in the region including Vietnam, the Philippines, and Brunei, each of which has laid counterclaims over parts of the sea. In response to these geopolitical dynamics and as part of its broader strategy to enhance military cooperation with countries in strategic locations, India has also decided to appoint a defence attaché to the Philippines. This move is paralleled by similar appointments in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Poland, and Ivory Coast.

The export of BrahMos missiles to the Philippines not only signifies a leap in India's defence manufacturing capabilities but also reflects its active engagement in fostering stronger military ties with countries around the globe. By doing so, India aims to play a more influential role on the international stage, especially in regions that are critical from a strategic and security perspective.
