Major Boost for Aatmanirbharta as India's Defence Exports Hit Record High, Says Lieutenant Governor Major Sinha
Lieutenant Governor Major Sinha praised India's achievements in reducing arms imports and increasing defence exports at the North-Tech Symposium-2023. He emphasized on the country's commitment to indigenous technological development and self-reliance in defence production.
The Lieutenant Governor Major Sinha of India recently highlighted the country's significant reduction in arms imports over the last 4-5 years and a record high in defence exports during the previous fiscal year. The Lt Governor linked these achievements to India's commitment towards innovation and indigenous technology development, thus reflecting a shift from dependency on foreign sources towards self-reliance.
North-Tech Symposium-2023

Sinha made these remarks at the North-Tech Symposium-2023 held on Jagti Campus of IIT. He attended this event alongside Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan, who also engaged in an informal interaction with media representatives present at the venue. The symposium was jointly hosted by Northern Command, Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), and IIT Jammu, bringing together hundreds of industries and defence tech startups.
A Milestone for Academia
According to Sinha, this marked a proud moment for academia as it was the first time that North-Tech Symposium – a defence expo – was being held at IIT Jammu. He expressed his belief that such collaborations are crucial for fostering synergy between army, industry, and academia in research, development, and innovation within defence technologies.
Showcasing Technological Advancements
The three-day event aimed to showcase cutting-edge technological advancements made by the Indian Army. It served as a platform where innovative solutions could be shared among different stakeholders involved in national security matters. Such events not only highlight progress but also identify areas where further research is required to meet future challenges.
India's Emergence as Defence Exporter
In addition to discussing domestic developments within India’s defense sector; Sinha also emphasized on India’s emergence as a defense exporter which has helped promote self-reliance in defense production. He attributed this to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has strongly advocated for 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in all sectors.
In conclusion, India's significant reduction in arms imports and increased defence exports indicate a promising shift towards self-reliance and indigenous development. The North-Tech Symposium-2023 served as a platform to highlight these achievements while fostering collaboration between the army, industry, and academia. This synergy is expected to drive further innovation and technological advancements within India’s defence sector under the banner of 'Aatmanirbharta'. As such, it is clear that under the current leadership, India is making strides towards becoming a globally competitive player in defence technology.
