Cypriot Foreign Minister Kombos Sees India as a Natural Partner in a Multipolar World

Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos recognises India as a crucial ally in a multipolar world, highlighting the potential of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement to enhance cooperation and economic opportunities.

Cyprus views India as a longstanding ally and a partner for future collaboration in a world that is becoming increasingly multipolar, according to Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. Speaking at an event, Kombos highlighted the potential benefits of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which could enhance economic opportunities for Cyprus, India, and other European nations. He delivered these remarks during the 55th Sapru House Lecture on Cyprus and the World.

Earlier, Kombos engaged in bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. They reviewed the India-Cyprus Joint Action Plan 2025-2029, established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Cyprus in June. This visit was seen as a pivotal moment for the partnership, setting the stage for future cooperation. Kombos noted that both countries have been shaped by their struggles against colonialism and value diplomacy and dialogue.

India's Role in a Multipolar World

Kombos emphasised India's emergence as a significant voice in the multipolar world. He stated, "Today, with India emerging as the leading voice in an increasing multipolar world, Cyprus sees India not only as an old friend but also as a partner for future cooperation." This sentiment reflects Cyprus's belief in building networks of cooperation amid global instability.

The Cypriot minister also addressed current global challenges such as financial crises, the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation spikes, and geopolitical tensions like Russia's actions in Ukraine. He mentioned threats in Gaza, the Red Sea, and Iran's nuclear ambitions. "Radicalism, extremism and terrorism are today a global reality," he said, stressing the need for collective action to ensure global security.

Cyprus's Commitment to Cooperation

Kombos highlighted Cyprus's commitment to fostering cooperation rather than division during times of fragmentation and uncertainty. He stated that no nation is immune to these challenges. "We are meeting here today in the midst of a polycrisis," he remarked, underscoring the interconnectedness of global issues.

In his speech, Kombos did not name any specific country but referred to an aggressor occupying part of Cyprus since 1974. Despite this situation, that country remains a sought-after ally for many others. This reference points to Turkey's control over northern Cyprus.

Economic Opportunities through IMEC

Kombos also discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a transformative initiative for regional connectivity. He described it as "a geopolitical tool with the potential to reshape global trade." The Mediterranean region plays a crucial role in this corridor, with Cyprus positioned to contribute significantly.

As a member of the EU, Cyprus is dedicated to enhancing EU-India relations. Kombos expressed support for concluding the long-negotiated FTA between the EU and India. He believes this agreement will unlock substantial economic opportunities for all involved parties.

Future Prospects for EU-India Relations

Cyprus is set to assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1, 2026. Kombos sees this as an opportunity to inject new energy into EU-India relations. He reiterated Cyprus's commitment to being a responsible state amid global complexities.

Kombos concluded by reflecting on the historical solidarity between Cyprus and India and their shared aspirations for strategic cooperation. "From historical solidarity to contemporary cooperation," he said, highlighting their forward-looking partnership.
