India Tests Pandemic Response with First Mock Drill in Rajasthan
A comprehensive mock drill named Vishanu Yuddh Abhyas Virus War Exercise took place in Ajmer, Rajasthan, from August 27 to August 31. This exercise was conducted to evaluate pandemic preparedness under the National One Health Mission (NOHM). The aim was to assess the readiness and response of the National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT), which includes experts from human health, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda praised this unique exercise. He highlighted the importance of the One Health Mission in fostering collaborations to address health concerns of humans, animals, and plants holistically and sustainably. The mock drill involved multiple stakeholders such as the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the Rajasthan state administration.
Mock Zoonotic Disease Outbreak
The exercise simulated a real-world outbreak scenario of a zoonotic disease. This scenario was created to test the response capabilities of various teams involved. The drill focused on two main components: investigating and identifying the virus responsible for the mock outbreak and initiating actions to control its spread among human and animal populations.
Independent observers monitored the response throughout the exercise. They found that the district and state teams, directed by NJORT, responded promptly and appropriately in most cases. However, some areas were identified that require further improvement. This feedback is crucial for enhancing future strategies.
Stakeholder Involvement
The involvement of multiple stakeholders ensured a coordinated approach. The exercise included participants from NCDC, ICMR, DGHS, DAHD, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, ICAR, and Rajasthan state administration. Their collaboration was essential for a comprehensive assessment of pandemic preparedness.
The Vishanu Yuddh Abhyas provided valuable insights into India's preparedness for zoonotic disease outbreaks. The findings will help inform future strategies to enhance response capabilities across all relevant sectors. This coordinated approach aims to ensure an efficient response to any potential outbreaks in the future.
The health ministry's statement emphasized that this first-of-its-kind exercise was successful in providing critical insights. These insights will be used to improve India's preparedness and response strategies for zoonotic disease outbreaks. The exercise demonstrated the importance of a coordinated effort across various sectors to address health concerns effectively.
In conclusion, the Vishanu Yuddh Abhyas Virus War Exercise was a significant step towards improving India's pandemic preparedness. By involving multiple stakeholders and simulating a real-world outbreak scenario, the exercise provided valuable lessons for future strategies. The feedback from independent observers will be used to enhance response capabilities and ensure a coordinated approach in addressing zoonotic disease outbreaks.
