Italian PM Suggests India and China Could Help Resolve Ukraine Conflict
India and China could contribute to resolving the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated after discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Meloni's comments in Cernobbio, northern Italy, followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion that India, Brazil, and China might mediate the conflict.

Potential Mediators
Putin mentioned at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok that he was in contact with India, Brazil, and China regarding the Ukraine conflict. He expressed confidence that these countries' leaders would be interested in mediating. "First of all, it is Chinese People's Republic, Brazil and India -- I am in contact with my partners and I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries -- and we have relations of trust and confidence with one another -- will be really interested and provide a helping hand," he said.
Support for Ukraine
Meloni emphasised that abandoning Ukraine is not an option for resolving the conflict. She reaffirmed Italy's unwavering support for Kyiv, aligning with Italy's national interest. "What must not happen is to think that the conflict can be resolved by abandoning Ukraine to its fate," she said.
India's Role
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kyiv on August 23, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister since Ukraine's independence in 1991. During his nearly nine-hour visit, Modi conveyed to Zelenskyy that both Ukraine and Russia should engage in dialogue without delay to end the war. He reiterated India's readiness to play an active role in restoring peace.
Commitment to Peace
Modi has consistently advocated for peace since the conflict began. He expressed his willingness to contribute personally to a peaceful resolution. His visit to Kyiv came six weeks after summit talks with Putin in Moscow.
Meloni's remarks highlight the potential roles of India and China in mediating the Ukraine conflict. Her statements align with Putin's earlier suggestions about possible intermediaries. The involvement of these nations could be crucial in seeking a peaceful resolution.
The Italian prime minister's comments underscore the importance of international cooperation in addressing global conflicts. The ongoing dialogue between world leaders reflects a collective effort towards achieving peace in Ukraine.
