India Bloc Vows to Block Any Bill Aimed at Silencing Media in Parliament

The INDIA bloc has pledged to block any government legislation that might suppress media freedom, according to Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav. His comments were directed at the contentious Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill, 2024. Yadav emphasised the media's role as democracy's fourth pillar, highlighting the challenges it faces.

India Bloc to Block Media Silencing Bills

Yadav criticised efforts to stifle the media, suggesting these attempts aim to conceal governmental shortcomings. He stated, "They are trying to silence the media to hide their own flaws. They're making new laws." The draft of the Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill was recently shared with select stakeholders, sparking backlash from media organisations.

Media Freedom and Opposition Stance

The government later announced plans for further consultations to create a revised version of the broadcasting bill. Yadav assured that the opposition, under the INDIA bloc, would prevent any legislation aimed at silencing the media from passing in Parliament. "The mandate that people have given to the opposition, I assure you on behalf of the INDIA bloc that any law silencing the media will not be allowed to pass in Parliament," he affirmed.

Former Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi expressed concern over India's position in global press freedom rankings. "You will be sad to hear that among 180 countries, we are at 159 on press freedom index... It is really a serious issue that we are so far behind in press freedom," he noted.

Concerns Over Journalist Safety

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi highlighted India's poor ranking on journalist safety indices. He remarked, "More alarming, the same foundation publishes the Security of Journalists Index...a world index measuring the security of journalists in the working ecosystem. That figure is more alarming. India is at 172 out of 180."

In 2024, India was ranked 159th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders. This international non-profit organisation assesses global press freedom annually. The low ranking underscores significant concerns about press freedom and journalist safety in India.

The INDIA bloc's commitment reflects a broader concern for maintaining democratic values and ensuring that media can operate without undue restrictions. The ongoing debate around the Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill highlights tensions between government initiatives and media independence.
