INDIA Bloc Moves Motion Against PM Narendra Modi For Backing Anurag Thakur's 'Caste' Remark

Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi has filed a Privilege Motion notice in Lok Sabha against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This action follows Modi's tweet praising BJP MP Anurag Thakur's speech, which included remarks that were later expunged from the House records. Channi claims that by promoting these remarks, the PM showed contempt for the House.

Prime Minister Modi had lauded Thakur's speech on X, calling it a "must hear." He described it as a perfect blend of facts and humour, exposing what he termed as the dirty politics of the INDI Alliance. Thakur's speech was a political counter to Rahul Gandhi's address in the Lok Sabha.

Thakur's Controversial Remarks

During his speech, Thakur targeted Rahul Gandhi by referencing Chakravyuh and its characters to criticise Congress. He highlighted alleged scams during Congress governments and questioned their stance on caste quotas. This led to a heated debate in the Lok Sabha.

Thakur's questioning of Gandhi's caste over the issue of caste census sparked significant controversy.

Samajwadi Party cheif and INDIA Bloc's major partner Akhilesh Yadav slammed Anurag Thakur for labelling it as an insult underlining that how can BJP MP ask anyone's caste. However, the INIDA bloc leaders maintained their demand for a caste census, stating such tactics would not deter them.

Channi's Response

Channi stated, "I have moved a Privilege Motion against the PM. I have written to the Lok Sabha Speaker that it was contempt of the House when the PM tweeted & promoted certain objectionable remarks made by Anurag Thakur after they were expunged from House records."

The Congress leader believes that promoting expunged remarks undermines parliamentary decorum. He insists that such actions should be addressed to maintain respect for parliamentary procedures.

The row over Thakur's comments and Modi's subsequent praise highlights ongoing tensions between BJP and Congress. The debate around caste census remains a contentious issue, with both parties using it to challenge each other's political stances.

This incident underscores the fragile nature of parliamentary discourse in India today. It also reflects broader political strategies employed by both parties as they navigate complex social issues like caste.
