Amidst rumblings within the opposition INDIA bloc, its leaders convened in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, on Friday, January 26, emphasizing the urgent need to unite and defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The conference, titled "Democracy will win," was organized by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a key ally of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.

Opposition Bloc Vows to Unite and Take Down BJP in Lok Sabha Battle

DMK's Unity Mantra

DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with leaders from the Congress, Left parties, and VCK, addressed the well-attended conference. Stalin stressed the importance of unity among the INDIA bloc constituents, highlighting the BJP's fear of the opposition alliance's potential victory, even at the level of a mayoral poll in Chandigarh. He cited the postponement of the Chandigarh mayor polls and the alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress there as examples of the BJP's apprehension.

Congress President's Appeal

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, unable to attend the conference, sent a message that was read out by his party's Lok Sabha MP Su Thirunavukkarasar. Kharge emphasized Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's warning against the cult of personality and appealed for a political culture based on reason and dialogue. He highlighted Ambedkar's foresight in recognizing the dangers of blind devotion and stressed the need for rational thinking and a commitment to justice in political discourse.

Challenges to Federalism

Kharge also criticized the BJP regime on various counts, outlining the challenges and strain on the federal structure. He pointed out instances where funds for natural disasters and ration shops were withheld based on political affiliations, highlighting the erosion of democratic principles.

Safeguarding the Republic

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury asserted the INDIA Bloc's commitment to safeguarding the character of the republic and praised Tamil Nadu for leading the fight against the BJP. He expressed concern over the threat to federalism under the BJP's rule and accused the ruling party of attempting to transform India into a fascist Hindutva rashtra. Yechury called for concerted efforts by opposition parties to defeat the BJP and emphasized the importance of saving India to bring about positive change.

VCK's Resolutions

VCK Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan presented a resolution demanding that all Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) be linked to the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The resolution also called for electors to deposit the VVPAT slips in separate boxes and for election authorities to declare results based solely on the count of VVPAT slips. Additionally, the VCK proposed 33 resolutions, including the implementation of the Proportional Representation system for elections, which were adopted during the conference.

The INDIA bloc conference in Tiruchirappalli served as a platform for opposition leaders to express their concerns about the current political climate and to reiterate their commitment to defeating the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. By emphasizing unity, safeguarding democratic principles, and addressing challenges to federalism, the opposition parties aim to strengthen their collective efforts and bring about positive change in India.
