INDIA Bloc Pledges to Fortify Counter-Terrorism Measures Post-Elections

In a recent statement, the Congress highlighted the attack in Poonch as indicative of a concerning pattern of terror incidents in the region. The party, along with its INDIA bloc allies, has committed to an unwavering effort in bolstering the counter-terrorism framework in Jammu and Kashmir post the Lok Sabha election results. The attack, which occurred on Saturday evening near Shahsitar in Poonch's Surankote area, resulted in injuries to five Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel, with one tragically succumbing to his injuries at a military hospital.

Officials have reported that a comprehensive joint operation involving the Army and police is actively ongoing across several areas including Shahsitar, Gursai, Sanai, and Sheendara Top. The objective is to neutralize the terrorists responsible for this heinous act. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed a strong condemnation of the terror attack through a post on X, emphasizing unity against terrorism.

Ramesh pointed out the absence of major terrorist activities in this locale from 2007 to 2014, contrasting it with the recent surge in attacks, especially against security forces. He noted with concern that since January 1st, 2023, the Rajouri-Poonch area has witnessed the loss of 25 security personnel and eight civilians. Post-June 4th, Ramesh affirmed that the Congress and its allies are dedicated to supporting India's soldiers by enhancing the counter-terrorism grid and fostering cooperation across political and societal lines to combat terrorism effectively.

In another statement on X, Ramesh criticized the BJP's approach towards Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in light of recent events. He accused them of spreading falsehoods as their electoral strategy. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also took to X to condemn the attack and extend condolences to the family of the deceased air warrior while wishing a swift recovery for the injured.

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi expressed his sorrow over the attack, deeming it both shameful and sad. He paid tribute to the martyred soldier and offered condolences to his family, alongside hopes for the quick recovery of those injured.
