Income Tax Audit Report Deadline Extended To October 7, 2024: Who Benefits From The CBDT's Decision?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially announced an extension for submitting tax audit reports for the Assessment Year 2024-25. The new deadline, moved from the original date of September 30, 2024, to October 7, 2024, comes in response to the challenges many taxpayers have faced with electronic submissions and the e-filing portal.
Who Benefits from the Extension?

The extension will benefit a wide array of taxpayers, including:
Individuals: Many individual taxpayers who were initially required to file their tax audit reports by the original deadline can now take advantage of the additional week to prepare and submit their documents.
Companies and Other Assessees: Businesses and other entities facing difficulties with the e-filing system will find the extra time particularly helpful. The deadline extension applies broadly to all assessments required to submit income tax returns by October 31, 2024.
Tax experts have noted that this extension is a significant relief for those struggling with the complexities of the filing process, especially given the technical difficulties encountered on the e-filing portal. Reports indicate that many taxpayers faced challenges navigating the system, which contributed to delays in submitting critical documents such as Form 10B and Form 10BB.
Acknowledgement of Technical Difficulties
The CBDT's circular, issued on September 29, 2024, acknowledged these technical issues and invoked its authority under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act to extend the submission deadline. Chartered Accountant Deepak Chopra, Chairman of the Direct Tax Committee at the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), confirmed that the extension applies to all affected taxpayers.
Importance of Meeting the New Deadline
While many welcome this move as a positive step, experts urge taxpayers to remain vigilant. It's crucial to meet the new deadline to avoid penalties that could amount to ₹1.5 lakh or 0.5% of total sales for late submissions. Those who miss the October 7 deadline may still submit their reports but will face penalties and risk having their income tax returns marked as defective.
The extension not only alleviates immediate pressure but has also raised hopes among some taxpayers for a further extension of the overall income tax return (ITR) deadline, potentially to November 7, 2024, especially with Diwali festivities approaching in early November.
In summary, the extension of the tax audit report deadline to October 7, 2024, offers vital financial relief for taxpayers who were struggling with the filing process, ensuring they have the necessary time to comply without incurring penalties.
