MEA Engages with US Authorities to Clarify Sanctions on Indian Entities Amid Ongoing Concerns

The US recently imposed sanctions on numerous individuals and organisations, including some from India, for allegedly aiding Russia's military-industrial sector. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that they are in communication with Washington to address these concerns. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that the sanctioned transactions and companies do not breach Indian laws.

MEA Discusses US Sanctions on India

India maintains a strong legal framework for strategic trade and non-proliferation controls. It is part of three major multilateral export control regimes: the Wassenaar Arrangement, the Australia Group, and the Missile Technology Control Regime. India has been effectively implementing relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions, including Resolution 1540 on non-proliferation.

US Sanctions and Indian Companies

The US Department of Treasury announced sanctions on 275 individuals and entities, including 15 from India, for allegedly supporting Russia's military needs. The list includes Indian companies such as Abhar Technologies and Services Private Limited, Denvas Services Private Limited, Emsystech, Galaxy Bearings Ltd, Orbit Fintrade LLP, Innovio Ventures, KDG Engineering Private Limited, and Khushbu Honing Private Limited.

Other Indian firms affected are Lokesh Machines Limited, Pointer Electronics, RRG Engineering Technologies Private Limited, Sharpline Automation Private Limited, Shaurya Aeronautics Private Limited, Shreegee Impex Private Limited, and Shreya Life Sciences Private Limited. The US also sanctioned companies from China, Switzerland, Thailand, and Turkiye for providing Russia with essential technology and equipment.

India's Response to Sanctions

Jaiswal confirmed that India is working with relevant departments to inform Indian companies about export control provisions. He emphasised India's commitment to non-proliferation by sensitising businesses about new measures that might affect them. Regular outreach events on strategic trade and export controls are conducted by Indian government agencies for industry stakeholders.

In another matter, Jaiswal addressed questions about an Indian private company demanding payment from Bangladesh for continued power supply. He clarified that this issue is a contractual matter between a private entity and the Bangladeshi government. The Indian government has no involvement in this contract.

Regarding the safety of Indian workers in Israel amid the West Asia conflict, Jaiswal assured that the Indian Embassy is in regular contact with them. A travel advisory was previously issued to ensure their safety. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 Indians work in Israel as part of a large community there.

The MEA continues to engage with US authorities to clarify issues related to the sanctions. This ongoing dialogue aims to resolve any misunderstandings while ensuring compliance with international regulations.
