Hyderabad, May 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) on October 11, 2014, under which every MP is supposed to adopt one village and develop it into Model Village by 2016.

Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Ministry of Commerce & Industry, took upon herself the challenge of adopting two villages and developing them into model villages. [Nirmala Sitharaman adopts two villages in Andhra Pradesh]

Two coastal villages of West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh - Pedhamyanavanilanka (PM Lanka) and Toorputallu were adopted by her on November 7, 2014.

As the Modi government completes an year of its governance, let us take a look at some of the achievements accomplished by Sitharaman in the two villages adopted by her.

The Phase one of SAGY was between October 11, 2014 to April 11, 2014. In six months, Sitharaman, along with her team, has worked on various sectors like drinking water, sanitation and cleanliness, skill development, community infrastructure, education and financial security.

Under each sector, many projects were initiated.

Drinking water: For improving the quality of drinking water, two RO water treatment plant were inaugurated at Toorputallu and one at PM Lanka.

As part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Sitharaman has launched projects like Bio-digester based toilets and Integrated Solid Waste Management Program.

A pilot project with around 44 bio-digester based toilets have been dedicated to the two villages and have yielded very positive response.

To maintain sanitation and cleanliness, each household will be given dustbins separately to collect bio- degradable & non-bio-degradable waste.

Skill development includes Salt Farming, Mushroom Cultivation and Vermi-compost farming.

The salt farmers are being trained to ensure that they move away from primitive methods and are taught about the scientific ways of producing salt.

Community Infrastructure

On April 7, 2015, the foundation stone for an Art Digital Community Center was laid at Pedhamyanavanilanka. It will be quipeed with facilities like Computer Training Center, Mahila Bhavan, Library, E- Panchayat, multipurpose hall and will have 24/7 electricity via solar panels.

In a milestone step towards education, on Feb 13,2015, an examination center was established in Toorputallu for Class X students of the two villages so that they do not have to walk miles to appear for their examinations.

In terms of financial security, special Camps were organised between Nov 16,2014 to Nov 18, 2014 in the two villages to ensure that all the households are covered under Jhan Dhan Yojana and AADHAR Scheme .

Awareness has been generated in the two villages regarding the 3 Financial Security schemes ( Atal Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Bhima Suraksha Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana).

The two villages -- Pedamainavanilanka and Toorputallu, will be developed into 'ideal village' with within a period of one year with funds provided from the MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLAD) and Central schemes.

The work on extension of ParakalaSeshavatharam Channel to meet the water based needs of the two adopted villages was inaugurated on April 8, 2015.

Bio-digester toilets

Bio- digester based toilet is the next age Sanitation Technology which does not require Sewage system, does not pollute water , recharges the ground water and saves government resources by eliminating the need for maintenance of sewage system.

12 Sanitation supervisors in total will be employed to collect waste from each household in the two villages.These supervisors shall be equipped with tricycles to collect the waste from each household

Training Workshop for Self Help Groups for Mushroom cultivation using vermi-compost farming was inaugurated in Pedhamyanavanilanka on April 7, 2015 and in Toorputallu on April 8, 2015.

Sanitation & Cleanliness

The collected waste will be dumped at a designated Dumping Yard in the two villages.

The bio-degradable waste will be used by women members of SHGs at the dumping yard for vermi-compost farming and for growing Mushrooms. The non- bio degradable waste will be sent for recycling.

The final by-product of these will be that the two villages will have a Scientific Solid Waste Management Program.

Class X students of the two villages had to walk between 5-7 kms to reach their examination center for Board Exams.

To evaluate the existing state of salt production and to improve the productivity & working conditions of salt farmers in the two villages, Salt Commission of India toured the villages several times.The Salt Commission has prepared an action plan to develop model salt farm in the area.

Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana is a rural development programme broadly focusing upon the development in the villages which includes social development, cultural development and spread motivation among the people on social mobilization of the village community.

Challenges ahead

One of the major challenge is to protect Pedhamyanavanilanka from sea erosion and ensure that it's existence is not threatened.

What will Phase 2 of SAGY cover?

In the phase 2 of SAGY, Sitharaman plans to work on areas like underground drainage system for Pedhamyanavanilanka, solar power based street lights for lighting the two villages, upgradation / maintainence of the main road in the two villages, construction of the highest priority CC roads, construction of around 1700 bio-digester toilets
and the inauguration of work on construction of elevated bridge at Nalli Creek.
