In Nirmala Sitharaman's elevation, a strong message to TN

In the elevation of Nirmala, the BJP hopes to send a strong message to Tamil Nadu and its people.

The elevation of Nirmala Sitharaman as the Defence Minister is an outright message that the Prime Minister has sent out to Tamil Nadu. Nirmala who hails from Tamil Nadu has been the unofficial mediator on Tamil Nadu related affairs.

In the Cabinet reshuffle that was held on Sunday, the elevation of Nirmala was the high point. In fact she is the first lady to hold the Defence portfolio as an independent charge.

Prior to this the only lady to have held the portfolio was Indira Gandhi when she was the Prime Minister.

Nirmala was seen as an Andhraite thanks to her marriage. However over the past couple of months, the loyal spokesperson of the party has been seen as a lady with strong roots in Madurai.

In the elevation of Nirmala, the BJP hopes to send a strong message to Tamil Nadu and its people. While the AIADMK was kept out of the Sunday reshuffle, the appointment of Nirmala Sitaraman sent a strong message. This also sets aside criticism that the BJP has been trying a back channel entry into TN by controlling the AIADMK. The appointment of Nirmala, experts say is a message ahead of 2019 that the BJP is a keen player in TN and will enter into some sort of an alliance and face the elections.
