In 2017 Ram Rahim had 4,000 Padma award recommendations

The Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim who was convicted in a rape case last week was recommended for the Padma award over 4,000 times in 2017. The website of the Home Ministry shows that in 2017 there were over 18,000 recommendations of which 4,000 were for Ram Rahim alone.

The website also suggests that three of the recommendations by the Dera chief himself. The others who nominated him only gave their first names. In the three recommendations made by himself, he gave the his Sirsa address in one of them. In the others he gave an address in Hisar and Rajasthan.

The Padma award are open for nomination. Anyone can propose a name for the award- Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri. The recommendations are then scrutinised by a committee before the final award is announced.
