PM Modi's Strategy Behind Import Duty Relaxation Revealed by Omar Abdullah

National Conference vice president, Omar Abdullah, alleges that PM Modi removed taxes on American apples and walnuts as part of an attempt to invite US President Joe Biden for the 2024 Republic Day parade. The move has drawn criticism from the opposition who claim it will harm local producers.

Recently, the Indian government announced a relaxation on the import duty for American apples and walnuts, a move that has sparked speculation and criticism. National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah suggested that this decision was motivated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's desire to invite US President Joe Biden as the chief guest at India's 2024 Republic Day parade.

The Motivation Behind Duty Relaxation

"It is now known what compelled the central government to remove the tax on American apples and walnuts. The prime minister Narendra Modi wanted to invite the American President Biden as a special guest for the January 26 ceremony," said Abdullah during a one-day party workers’ convention at Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Abdullah further criticized this policy change, suggesting it would negatively impact local producers. "They made sure that apples, walnuts and dry fruits will come from America while our own apples, walnuts and dry fruits will rot in the markets," he added.

Tariff Policies: A Retaliatory Move?

This announcement came ahead of the G20 Summit where India revealed its plans to remove additional duties on about half a dozen US products including not only apples and walnuts but also almonds and lentils. These duties were initially imposed back in 2019 as part of a retaliatory strategy after America increased tariffs on certain steel and aluminium products originating from India.

Criticisms of Government Policies

Beyond his critique of these specific trade policies, Abdullah also expressed broader concerns regarding governance in Jammu & Kashmir under PM Modi's leadership. He argued that these recent decisions reflect an overall pattern of dissatisfaction with governmental policies across different regions within Jammu & Kashmir.

"The situation in Jammu & Kashmir is different now; people are unhappy and disappointed in every region. Youth are angry," he said, highlighting the growing discontent among the younger generation.

In conclusion, while the Indian government's decision to relax import duties on American apples and walnuts may seem like a simple trade policy adjustment, it has sparked significant controversy and criticism. Critics argue that this move prioritizes international relations over domestic interests, potentially at the cost of local producers. Furthermore, these criticisms extend beyond this specific policy change to reflect broader concerns about governance under PM Modi's leadership in Jammu & Kashmir. As India prepares for its 2024 Republic Day parade and potential visit from US President Joe Biden, these issues will likely continue to be hotly debated.
