IMD Weather Update: Cyclonic Storm To Bring Rains In South India, North Battles Cold Waves
A recent development in weather patterns has led to an alert being issued due to a low pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted that this will bring about heavy rainfall across several southern Indian states. This weather event is expected to significantly impact regions including coastal areas of South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu, with Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu poised to experience major downpours
.

The Skymet weather report aligns with the forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department, predicting substantial rainfall in parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu within the next 48 hours. Coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are particularly expected to bear the brunt of moderate to heavy showers. However, the rain is not confined to these areas alone. Light to moderate rainfall is also anticipated in Rayalaseema, North Tamil Nadu, and South Chhattisgarh, extending even to the Gangetic plains of South Chhattisgarh, East Telangana, and West Bengal. This system is believed to be the last significant weather phenomenon for the year 2024.
In the midst of these heavy rains, the Meteorological Department has also highlighted a contrasting weather extremity affecting North India. A continuous decline in temperature across the northern states has been reported, with further drops of 2 to 3 degrees expected in East India over the ensuing four days. The chilling cold is forecasted to bring temperatures down to 3 to 6 degrees in regions such as Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Rajasthan. Meanwhile, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh will see minimum temperatures ranging from 6 to 12 degrees.
The chilling cold is not without its hazards. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of severe cold waves striking parts of Himachal Pradesh. Similar cold wave conditions are predicted for West Rajasthan on December 20 and 21, with Punjab also in the grip of these frigid temperatures. The advisory extends to Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Haryana-Chandigarh, and West Rajasthan until December 25, signaling a prolonged period of cold weather.
Adding to the winter woes, an Orange Alert for dense fog has been declared by the Meteorological Department. This alert pertains to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh experiencing dense fog on December 20 and from December 22 to 24. East Rajasthan and Jharkhand are also expected to be enveloped in fog from December 20 to 22, with West Bengal and Sikkim facing similar conditions during the late night to morning hours of December 21 and 22.
