IMA Leaders Distressed by Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder, Demand Action
Senior members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressed their deep distress over the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at a hospital. They emphasised that it was the institution's moral duty to file an FIR. IMA national president R.V. Asokan and secretary-general Anilkumar J. Nayak, who were in the city, also voiced their shock at how the victim's parents were treated post-crime.

After visiting RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body was discovered on August 9, Asokan stated, "We have no words… for the brutality. And, also the way the parents have been treated even after this crime also touches us, it is very bad. Humanity was lost and the institution should have taken ownership. They have the moral responsibility to file FIR."
IMA Members Engage with Agitating Doctors
The IMA representatives also interacted with doctors who were protesting by observing ceasework in response to the incident. They met with the parents of the deceased postgraduate trainee to offer their condolences and support.
The Calcutta High Court had recently ordered that the investigation be transferred from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision came amid growing concerns about how the case was being handled locally.
The IMA officials' visit aimed to show solidarity with both the grieving family and the medical community affected by this tragic event. Their presence underscored the need for accountability and justice in such grievous matters.
Asokan and Nayak's statements highlighted a broader call for institutional responsibility and humane treatment of victims' families. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for systemic changes within medical institutions.
The ongoing protests by doctors reflect a collective demand for safer working conditions and stricter measures against such heinous crimes within healthcare settings. The IMA's involvement signifies a unified stance against violence in medical environments.
This tragic event has not only shaken the medical community but also raised critical questions about safety protocols and institutional responsibilities in hospitals across India.
The transfer of the case to CBI is seen as a step towards ensuring a more thorough and impartial investigation, which many hope will lead to justice for the victim and her family.
In light of these developments, there is a growing call for reforms to prevent such incidents in future and ensure that healthcare professionals can work in a safe environment.
